Obituary of Mary Jane Skarzynski

Hilton - Mary Jane Skarzynski passed away on November 18, 2021, at the age of 78 after a blessedly short yet grueling battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born March 18, 1943 in Amsterdam, NY to Vincent and Anna Mae (Small) Smith. She is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Skarzynski, Sr.; her children, Robert "Rob" (Kristine) Skarzynski, Jr. and Susan Skarzynski; her grandchildren, Scott Skarzynski, Peter Skarzynski and Mick Joyce. She was predeceased by her son, Scott Skarzynski.

Mary Jane worked at Village Elementary and Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton as a teacher's assistant. She loved reading and channeled that enthusiasm by serving as a diligent member of the Parma Library Board and a volunteer at Mainly Books in Hilton.

Mary Jane was a faithful member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and read her Bible every day. Her husband, Bob, attributes this faith and devotion to her quick placement in Shepherd Home, where she spent her final days being cared for by the devoted and compassionate staff and volunteers.

Mary Jane enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball and most especially the Chicago Cubs. A real highlight was when the Cubs finally won a World Series Championship, and Mary Jane, Bob and Rob experienced a part of that history when they attended Game 3 of the series.

Above all else, Mary Jane enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandsons. The annual family camping trips to Letchworth State Park will always hold many special memories. She also found great comfort in her animal companions, especially “her” cat Tiny, who spent the last few months blissfully and faithfully at her side.

Mary Jane will be greatly missed by all who knew her for her selflessness, generous spirit and innate thoughtfulness for others. In the many cards sent upon her passing, everyone commented that she was “kind, sincere and a real joy,” and that she “lived her life with grace and dignity.”

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 4:00 -7:00 pm at the Thomas E.
