Shirley Liktor

Obituary of Shirley H. Liktor

Rochester – Shirley H. Liktor (Markham) finally chose to let go on April 1st, 2020 at the age of 71 after a courageous struggle against cancer that lasted over two years.

She was named for her mother and born October 2nd, 1948 as the middle child among 13 siblings. The bedlam common in such a large family developed in her an independent spirit that she carried upon venturing from her Leighton Avenue home at 18 years old.

Shirley spent her younger days adventuring around local haunts like The Hide-A-Way and Grumpy's where she enjoyed great friendships and shone while tending bar. Later in life while driving throughout the city, Shirley could point out the spots these classic bars used to occupy, and she loved to share tales of the rowdy times she had back in the day.

Priorities evolved for Shirley the day she met her soon-to-be husband Joe. Their serendipitous love was something truly special. Marrying in 1978, Shirley and Joe built a home and family together which included their son William whom they both loved and cherished. Her family was her first love from its very beginnings until her dying breath.

Shirley was always known for her smile and her witty, peculiar sense of humor. Co-workers would often joke about her “Shirleyisms” and loved the way she could keep things light and funny regardless of the situation. She gained many friends throughout her 30 years at Sears and had more fun than is probably allowed at a retail store. Of course her awesome personality wasn’t exclusive to the workplace, and everyone who got to know her always walked away the better for it.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Liktor Jr.; her parents Harold and Shirley Markham; and her siblings David, William, Harold Jr., Beverly and Roni. She is survived by her son, William Liktor (Alicia Ainsworth); her siblings, John Markham, Robert (Barb) Markham, Roy Markham, Howard (Karen) Markham, Paul Markham, Alta (Chuck) Morin and Doris Behan; and many nieces, nephews, step-children, and several dear friends including Diana Graham.

The family would like to express deep gratitude to the many RGH, Lipson Cancer Center, Rochester Regional and Lifetime Nurses, Doctors and support staff dedicated to her care in such a particularly difficult time.
