Viola was born to Howard and Nellie Cleveland on July 15, 1923 in Mount Morris, New York.  She was the oldest of four children. She moved to Rochester after graduation from high school and worked in a factory making supplies for WWII. There, she met her loving husband of 70+ years, Richard Mattle. They were married at the Truax Field Army/AirforceBase Chapel in Madison, Wisconsin on her 21st birthday. They had 5 children together.

Vi was a farm girl at heart, growing and canning fruits and vegetables for her big family. She loved spending time in the kitchen. She was known for her delicious sweet rolls, buttermilk pancakes, Christmas cut-out cookies, strawberry jam and sauerbraten. Golfing was her passion and she won many championships in her women's league. She was also a past President of the former Cardinal Mooney's Women's Guild. Viola lived a wonderful life and she will be dearly missed. May the memory of her beautiful smile be a blessing for us all.
