Obituary of Mary A. Maier

Hamlin - Mary Maier, age 80, passed away peacefully on January 30th, 2025 after suffering a sudden illness. Mary had just celebrated her 80th birthday in Florida with her loving husband Bernard (B.J.) and many wonderful friends.

Mary was born on January 26th, 1945 in Brockport, NY to the late Stella and Alfred Chike. Mary is predeceased by husband, Gordon W. Lasch; sister,  Anne Ross; and grandson, Shane Michael Baxter. Mary is survived by two sisters, Rose Marie Beswick (David) and Anne Hug (Robert); children, Deborah Merritt (Edward), John Seaman, Tammy Baxter (Shane); 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mary enjoyed working with children and had a long and successful career as an elementary teacher for over 34 years at the Leo Bernabi School and the St. Lawrence School. Students would often come up to Mary in the community and ask her if she remembered them. It always made her feel so happy knowing she had such a lasting impact on her students.

Mary was also active in the local and state fire departments writing and securing grants for such things as a fire safety house, safety expos for children and summer camps specifically devoted to child burn victims. Mary also took the lead in facilitating many Hamlin Fire Department pageants including the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Pageant, and acted as advisor for a local contestant in the Miss National Teenager’s Pageant.

Mary was happiest surrounded by friends and family, planning large holiday parties and sipping a Perfect Southern Comfort Manhattan.
