Obituary of Judith Verney

Verney, Judith LaBaie "Judy", Mar. 23, 1937 - Oct. 16, 2015, 78, Venice, formerly of Hillsborough, N.J., died Oct. 16, 2015. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years George Raymond "GR" Verney. Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law: Michael A. and Christopher G., both of Sarasota, and Timothy R. and Michele Lee of Hillsboro, Oregon; a grandson, Benjamin G. of Hillsboro; a granddaughter, Emma G. of Hillsboro; a granddaughter, Taylor of Hillsboro; a grandson, Will of Hillsboro. Judy was a lifelong dedicated Registered Nurse involved in many aspects of nursing and public health care during her career and after her retirement. She retired as Acting Director of the New Jersey State Health Department in Trenton, New Jersey. She was a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Community Health Nursing for 40 years. She obtained her BSN from Russell Sage College, Troy, in 1958; MSN from Rutgers University, Newark, 1977. While at the New Jersey State Department of Health she was a certified public manager; director of the state Healthstart and "Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies" programs; coordinator for preventive and primary care services; manager and coordinator of the state child and adolescent health program; liaison to the federal Americorps program. She was also a clinical instructor for the graduate nursing program at Rutgers University. Memberships included: American Nurses Association; New Jersey Public Health Association; National League for Nursing; New Jersey State Nurses Association, Community Health Nurse of the Year award 1986; New Jersey League for Nursing; National Society of Certified Public Managers; New Jersey Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators; Soroptimist International; Phi Kappa Psi. According to her college yearbook, "Sage Leaves", she was remembered with "Genuine friendship", having a "Spasmodic giggle", and always up for the movies. Judy was an active and contributing member of her church including greeter, attendance record keeping, volunteer at the welcome center, choir, a widow's group, Ruth's Circle bible study, and assisting the Parish nurse with health screenings; Venetian Harmony Sweet Adelines, an a cappella barbershop chorus for women; and Venice-Nokomis Elks, donating a festive Christmas wreath last year for the lodge front entrance. A memorial celebration-of-life service and fellowship for family and friends will be held at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Venice Island, 790 S. Tamiami Trail, starting 1p.m. Saturday, November 21. Farley Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements. A service will be held in December in New York State.
